Claire Danes, now known for her role as Carrie Mathison on Showtime’s popular series, “Homeland,” revealed to Vogue in its newest issue that she was out of work for two years before she was chosen for the part of Mathison.After Danes’ role as Temple Grandin in the 2010 with the same name awarded her an Emmy, the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress, she failed to find a role that suited her. Danes told Vogue after Temple, “I just couldn’t play dinky — you know, the girl.
The 34-year-old actress hit a low period in her career.
"I was stuck," Danes said in the August 2013 issue of Vogue. "It was confusing. I got a lot of plaudits, and it didn't translate into more work. I was really, really struggling during that time."
When no work came, Danes began to doubt herself.
“It was grim,” Danes said of that time in her life. “I was very hurt. Two years of not working was brutal. And a point came where I thought, I really like interior design. Someone suggested, ‘Maybe your real success is in your personal life.’ ”
Danes said she sought out advice during that time from actresses such as
Meryl Streep, Susan Sarandon and Jodie Foster who have legendary, timeless careers. She recalled the advice she got from these renowned actresses to Vogue.
"You have to pick your battles on set,” Danes said. “You have to come to work from a place of love. You have to stay hydrated when you have crying scenes. You have to go to college. And you have to ask for money because there's always more money and they won't give it to you because you're a girl!"
Her persistence and dedication paid off, and thanks to her role as the bipolar and brilliant CIA agent on “Homeland,” Vogue now deems the star “the hottest heroine on TV.”
