Adolf Hitler’s long-time girlfriend Eva Braun may in fact have Jewish ancestry, according to a new British documentary airing next week.
Hitler married Braun shortly before they killed themselves in a Berlin Bunker in 1945.
The Channel 4 series “Dead Famous DNA” maintained that Eva Brain had Jewish ancestry on her mother’s side.
Hair from Braun’s brush was analyzed and researchers found the DNA sequence of the Ashkenazi Jews, which passed from mother to daughter. About 80 percent of the world’s Jewish population have this DNA sequence. During the early 19th century, many Ashkenazi Jews in Germany converted to Catholicism.
Braun attended Catholic school. Hitler, who fell in love with her when she was just a girl of 17, had carefully vetted the girl but likely didn’t know about her Jewish heritage. It is unlikely Braun knew either.
He married her on April 29, 1945.
Producers however were unable to obtain mouth swabs from Braun’s relatives living today.
Her family did confirm that the hair belongs to Eva Braun. It was found in a brush, which sat in a cosmetic case, taken from her apartment by a US Army officer.
“This is a thought-provoking outcome,” said the show’s host, Mark Evans. “I never dreamt that I would find such a potentially extraordinary and profound result. Racism and fascism, ideas that one racial group is superior to another, made a mockery of by studying dead famous DNA.”
