Pretty Little Liars: The Softening of Alison DiLaurentis

Thousand-mile stares have become commonplace with Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse), the blond catalyst of Pretty Little Liars, as she wrestles with how she got here: two murdered family members, an estranged father and brother, a grifter for a husband whose real name is impossibly silly, and constant suffering as a magnet for (at best) ne'er-do-wells and (at worst) raging psychopaths. The fact is that the legacy Alison created in the flashbacks of the first few seasons and her pre-Winter's Ball resurgence to high school queen bee has been poked full of holes. Whipping up a dust devil of drama so tight that she could come out of the eye unscathed while everything else is wreckage? [...] all the times we flashed back to Alison body-shaming Husky Hanna (Ashley Benson) or blue-balling Emily (Shay Mitchell) or encouraging Aria's (Lucy Hale) darker impulses or flat out challenging Spencer (Troian Bellisario), not to mention all the times we saw her tease kids mercilessly or smirk in the face of someone's demise, made the case that Ms. DiLaurentis she deserved all the punishment that befell her. [...] we learned that her being buried alive was probably the best thing that could've happened to her. [...] her return to high school would eventually peak with a murder trial that found her guilty of a crime when she wasn't even in the same neighborhood in which it was committed. The Rosewood justice system has about as many sharp legal minds as a colony of meerkats. Her interactions were no longer fueled by contempt and rebellion. [...] maybe most importantly, she took a back seat in the clique. Drama still swirls around her, and she doesn't always opt for the best path toward a comfortable life behind a white picket fence (i.e. maybe don't date your sister's lover/fake doctor), but she yearns for it all the same. This Girl Made An Awesome 'Ghostbusters' Costume And Is Our New Shero

Who you gonna call? This awesome little Ghostbuster.

Matilda Burnett, 7, is a huge fan of the “Ghostbusters” franchise and when it came time to see the new movie, she took it upon herself to dress up for the occasion in a costume that’s nothing short of kickass.

The 7-year-old’s dad, Max Burnett, tweeted a photo of his daughter in full gear and it not only got praise from many social media users, but it also got a shoutout from the director of the new “Ghostbusters” movie, Paul Feig.

“Okay, this is why we made this movie,” Feig tweeted. “She is awesome and I love that she made her own proton pack! She’s a warrior.”

The girl, who proudly wore the costume to a movie theater in Sherman Oaks, California, rocked the jumpsuit complete with the “Ghostbusters” logo on the front, along with the proton pack filled with a small, smiling ghost. (Cute, right?)

Burnett told the Huffington Post that Matilda came up with the idea all on her own and just enlisted her mother, Emily, to help make the proton pack and gun out of yarn and a plastic water bottle.

“About an hour before we were to leave to the movie theater, she disappeared into her room,” Burnett said. “Thirty minutes later, she had turned an old zookeeper costume she made into a “Ghostbusters” outfit. She had drawn and cut out the patches and attached them with tape.”

Right before the family headed out, Matilda quickly ran back and grabbed her most important accessory ― a stuffed ghost she put in her backpack.

“Very funny girl,” Burnett added.

The costume was well worth it, especially since Matilda ended up loving the reboot, which featured a female quartet. It also reinforced a feminist idea she often talks about.

“She was very excited that it was all women. She regularly tells me that there should be more ‘girl bosses’ in the world,” her dad said. “I agree.”

In fact, it was this appreciation for girl power that pushed Burnett to share the photo on Twitter.

“I was reading an interview with Paul Feig about “Ghostbusters” and he talked a little bit about all the hate he got about casting all women in the movie,” he said. “And so, on a whim, I thought I’d send him, and the actresses, ... Matilda’s photos and let them know that his movie inspired at least one girl to be a hero.”

And we can safely say that Matilda is our hero.

To The Stranger Who Called Me A 'Fag' For Having Rainbow Hair And Tattoos

Dear Stranger:

You were with a friend of yours. I remember coming into the restaurant behind you two, and it was quite crowded -- understandably so, due to it being lunch time for most of our fellows and peers with an average 9-5 job.

We were all packed in somewhat tightly. I'm sure you're not entirely unfamiliar with it, as the line in front of us was just as sardine-esque as behind me. At first, you seemed to have no problem with my being behind you... right up until the moment you turned around, looked down, and noticed that I was sporting bright rainbow hair and, because of the dress I was wearing, my rather brilliant and large rainbow tattoo was proudly on display.

I am proud of those rainbows. The one on my leg details the struggles of my life -- from assault to dealing with depression and anxiety and the aftermath of my past -- losing loved ones, finding new passions, and my fear of the unknown. That tattoo describes the first 32 years of my life. And yes, it's covered in rainbows, because without rain, there are no rainbows.

The rainbows in my hair of course are simple dye. I am somewhat obsessed with rainbows, as they are one of my favorite things on the planet, and nothing makes me happier than to see one.

That tattoo describes the first 32 years of my life. And yes, it's covered in rainbows, because without rain, there are no rainbows.

Apparently, however, my rainbows scared you, rather than made you smile (like they do me). You took one look at me, from head to toe, and hissed to your friend, "Ugh, let's move forward. I need my space from that faggot."

You needed your space from "that faggot," meaning me -- the girl minding her own business, simply using her lunch hour to visit this restaurant for her favorite food. Her comfort food. The food that has for well over a decade been her favorite meal of choice whenever something drastic happened in her life.

I stepped back from both of you, almost knocking over the people behind me due to the crush in the line, but I stepped back to give you the space you so obviously required, to keep you away from the "rainbowed faggot" standing behind you.

But even that wasn't enough for you.

As we all made our way down the ordering line, you continued to make snarky remarks about "that fat fag" and "that freak" and "god, girls like me should just get out of our country, because we're what's making America weak" and how people like me were responsible for "the downslide of of our nation."

I may have pretended otherwise as I smiled weakly with the restaurant staff preparing my steak bowl, but I heard every word you said. And every time someone else around us, including one of the restaurant staff members at one point, would snicker or chuckle at one of the things you said, while behind my darkened sunglasses, my eyes continued to tear up, and I struggled so hard to keep control of my emotions.

Finally, you paid and found seats, and I paid and chose a seat as far across the dining area as I could possibly get. Unfortunately, you were also sitting right next to the drink machine, so when I went over to fill up my Coke, I was once more treated to your hateful, hurtful, homophobic remarks.

This time, however, *I could no longer stay silent.*

I went and sat my drink down at my table, and then walked back over to both of you. I stood about four feet away from you near the trash can at the drink station, and I looked you in the eye as you said, "Oh great, the fag's back" to your friend.

And I said, "Am I really that scary? Because I have rainbow hair and rainbow tattoos? Really?"

You said, "Yes, you are, now get away from me."

I then asked if that made it ok for you to say such hurtful things to me, but you backpedaled quickly when you saw an employee nearby wiping down tables, and said something like "I... that... GET OUT OF MY SPACE!"

I packed up my food and rushed out of the dining area, no longer able to hide my tears behind my sunglasses from such painful remarks.

After practically yelling at me to get away from you, I shook my head, rolled my eyes despite the hidden tears still threatening to overflow my eyes, and said only, "Grow up," as I turned and walked as calmly back to my table as I could.

By this time, I was trembling all over and quickly gathered up all of my things before making my way over to the cashier to ask for a bag and a lid. I told the cashier I couldn't sit there in a restaurant where such hateful, homophobic, bigoted comments were tolerated. The cashier quickly got me a bag and lid. I packed up my food and rushed out of the dining area, no longer able to hide my tears behind my sunglasses from such painful remarks.

Outside, I was hit with the precursor of a panic attack that resulted in me kneeling down, crying, on the sidewalk. A few passersby asked if I was all right, as well as an employee from an establishment next door, who asked if I would like to come in out of the heat while I regained my composure. (Thank you for that, lady with the red-shirt from next door. I'm more grateful for your moment of unexpected kindness than I can say).

Eventually, I made my way to my car after regaining my composure a little, just in time for the full panic attack, hyperventilation and painful hand-cramps to hit me in the car, where I sat for over half an hour in the restaurant parking lot and cried because of the treatment of both you and your friend and the hateful, disgusting remarks that you felt it was okay to say to me just because you assumed that my being a fan of rainbows means I am a "scary gay."

Once I had calmed down and regained the majority of my composure, I took my uneaten, bagged food back inside the restaurant and asked the cashier I'd previously spoken with if I could speak to a manager. While I was waiting, I looked for you. I want you to know that; I looked for you, not out of fear, or anger, or thoughts of retribution, but because I actually felt sorry for you, that your small-minded bigotry was so ingrained that you felt it okay to treat a random stranger like that, in public -- a random stranger who only wanted to enjoy her favorite comfort food for lunch after a trying couple of days.

I hope you know that your words matter, that your words have an effect on people, and that your hatred did not go unnoticed.

When the manager arrived, I held out the bag of entirely uneaten food, and with tears streaming down my face, I explained to him what had happened and told him that I did not want the food; I just wanted my money back. He quickly complied, after immediately disavowing any possibility that his crew had laughed along with the girls. He offered me a "Buy-one, get-one free" coupon, but I turned him down -- I couldn't believe his immediate dismissal from an obviously distraught customer and his denial of what happened right after I told him it took place.

I took my refund receipt and left the store once more, this time to go home -- no longer hungry and no longer as in love with the restaurant as I had been less than an hour before.

I know you are unlikely to ever read this, but I hope you know that your words matter, that your words have an effect on people, and that your hatred did not go unnoticed. I myself reported your behavior, among other things, to the restaurant, and next time I've got a ready-made comeback for the next one of you who decides I'm something less than human just because I happen to love rainbows or because you think I'm gay, and that makes it somehow okay for you to hate me.

I also learned later that day that a woman named Katie also made a complaint about what happened. I do not know who Katie is, but I can only say thank you to this anonymous woman who apparently also witnessed what was going on and took it upon herself to report it to the restaurant as well, of her own volition.

My deepest thanks to you, Katie, whomever you are, for being willing to say something too, and not just stay silent or "mind your own business" about what happened on Tuesday afternoon.

Denial, More Than Anything, Is Hindering Progress For Victims Of Child Sexual Abuse

$

0
If money is one hell of a drug, then denial is one of the biggest drug dealers in the world. And no group understands that truth better than survivors of child sexual abuse. While survivors, advocates and some lawmakers have fought hard to bring justice, there's been little progress made; if anything, we've been forced to take giant steps backwards. And by forced, I'm referring to the tremendous power of, more than anything, denial.

Take, for example, the recent killing of the child victims act by NY state lawmakers. Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan offered little explanation when asked as to why a deal couldn't be reached by Governor Cuomo, Senate, and the Assembly. As quoted by the NY Daily News, Flanagan merely said, "There was no agreement, that's it." Senator Brad Hoylman, a Democrat from Manhattan who supported the Child Victims Act, noted that the Senate gave the green light to authorize online fantasy sports betting. But yet, historically, isn't this usually how things go down? Nonsensical bills such as the online fantasy sports betting and the act pushing for food to be served in funeral services establishments are cleared through the Senate and Assembly; however, it can take years and years to see any change in the areas of mental health reform, child sexual abuse prevention, and of course, gun control.

Thus, the killing of the Child Victims Act in New York equals no statute of limitations reform for child sexual abuse survivors. The Catholic Church paid over $2M for lobbyists to block the reform. Of course, they did. Why wouldn't they? Like I said, scoot some money in, look the other way; denial is the biggest drug trafficker, and money is the most abused drug in the world. Flash some money in front of some lawmakers' faces, and they will do just about anything they are paid to do.

In America, there are over 42,000,000 survivors of child sexual abuse, and that's just the reported estimate. I am a survivor; mind you, the word "survivor" has absolutely no glamorous connotation attached to it. Recovery has been like swimming in a blood bath; for the most part, many of us deal with a variety of mental health conditions. Getting to a place of recovery can be a literal miracle. And yet there is slim justice I or any survivor can seek currently for the horrors we have had to face; horrors that are equivalent to being murdered silently over and over again.

I'm sure that the girl who Marc Gafni admitted abusing can't take any legal action, either, which leads me to my second case. Back in May I attended a coordinated protest at the opening of the 365 by Whole Foods in Los Angeles. Together with NAASCA, Nancy Levine (author of The Tao of Pug), and my colleague, Matthew Sandusky from Peaceful Hearts Foundation, who led the protest in New York City, we stood outside of the store and attempted to educate potential shoppers about Co-CEO John Mackey's ties with Marc Gafni, and his loyalty to Gafni by not standing up on a public level for survivors of child sexual abuse.
Mackey is positioned as a leader, and can use his voice for the greater good; instead, similar to mentioned NY lawmakers, he has chosen to remain silent and back a known pedophile. Again, abusing money and looking the other way leaves no progress for the millions who have been victimized. You, dear Mackey, are enabling the abuser and acting like one, yourself, in your chosen silence.

The Mackey situation ties into my third point. Gabrielle Greene Sulzberger, the wife of publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr., sits on the board of Whole Foods. In a recent article by Levine which uncovered email exchanges that took place between her and Executive Editor of the New York Times, Dean Baquet, Levine referenced the relationship between the New York Times lack of reporting on the Child Victims Act and the Sulzberger financial interests in Whole Foods Market. Mr. Baquet replied, "Only someone quite paranoid would see such a connection." This is a classic gaslighting response. But not only did the New York Times not cover any news of the Child Victims Act, they also did not follow up on the Gafni story, and did not report any of the related protests that took place at the 365 by Whole Foods. As well, they never bothered to publish any of Mackey's statements; and yet, Levine is accused by Mr. Baquet of being paranoid for seeing a connection?

His response is all too familiar. When I was sexually victimized by someone close to me and victimized by my mother, I was made to feel as though I was someone who had no voice, who was "crazy." As a child, I developed a serious inferiority complex. During my modeling career, I was raped by a photographer, and when I confronted the director of my agency, I was shot down immediately, and told, yet again, that I was "crazy." Instead of seeking help right away, I buried the pain with eating disorders, substance abuse, and lived in...denial. (To find out more about my story, sign up for the release of my memoir here.)

Every leader here has a platform to help survivors of child abuse, and yet they choose to remain silent. In doing so, they are enabling the perpetrators and hindering the millions of victims from getting the help they so desperately need. Abusers feed off silence and denial - see the connection? I don't think you can call us paranoid now. Here's what you can do to help:

• Donate to the PAC (Political Action Committee) started to help support NY politicians who will support the Child Victims Act in the future and vote out of office the bill-killers.
• Search Statue of Limitations by State and help bring justice to victims.
• Write to Liz Spayd, the Public Editor of the New York Times, and ask her to address the "appearance of a conflict of interest" -- public@nytimes.com
• Stop shopping at Whole Foods and 365 by Whole Foods and spread the word. Do not support companies who refuse to help victims of child sexual abuse, and enable sexual abuse predators. Think carefully the next time you support a company with your hard-earned dollars.

*In a suspected case of honour killing, a 16-year-old Dalit boy was allegedly killed by family members of an upper caste girl with whom he was in love with in Navi Mumbai.*

Seven persons have been arrested in connection with the case and the 17-year-old girl has also been detained, police said today. Following the incident, some members of the Republican Party of India (RPI) took out a morcha to Nerul Police Station late last evening demanding action against the police personnel who had allegedly refused to initially register a complaint by the parents of the boy of his abduction by the girls brothers.

The Navi Mumbai Police yesterday suspended two officers of Nerul Police Station in this connection. The boy, identified as Swapnil Sonawane, a resident of Dharave village in Nerul area of Navi Mumbai in Thane district, was in love with a 17-year-old schoolmate.
However, the girls parents did not approve of the relationship.

On Tuesday night, a group of around 20-25 people, including the girls family members, severely beat up the boy with iron rods at Dharave village in Navi Mumbai, police said.
The boy was later taken to a local hospital where he was declared brought dead, they said.

Subsequently, the police yesterday arrested the girls brothers Sagar Naik (25), Sajesh Naik (21), father Rajendra Naik (50), mother Malti Naik (43), the brothers friends Ashish Thakur (23) and Durgesh Patil (22), and an autorickshaw driver Sameer Shaikh (23).

The accused have been booked under relevant IPC sections for murder, kidnapping, rioting and criminal intimidation and also under The SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act), police said.

The arrested persons were produced in Vashi court yesterday and remanded in police custody till July 25, Senior Police Inspector, Nerul, Adikrao Pol said.

The girl was also detained and sent to a Bhiwandi remand home, police said. Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale said that two officers of Nerul police station have been placed under suspension against whom there are allegations that they refused to register the complaint of the boys family.

An officer of the ACP rank from another division will carry out investigation into the case, he said last night. Reported by Deccan Herald 4 hours ago.

Shah Rukh Khan or Hrithik Roshan - Who will play king to 'Padmavati'?

Shah Rukh Khan or Hrithik Roshan - Who will play king to 'Padmavati'? Sanjay Leela Bhansali is set to score a casting coup for his next, 'Padmavati'. The filmmaker, we hear, is in the process of finalising an industry biggie to play king to Deepika Padukone's titular character post Vicky Kaushal's exit from the project. Buzz is that SLB is torn between Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan.

*Also read: Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next film on Alauddin Khilji and Padmavati**Shah Rukh Khan*

A source working on the project says, "Bhansali is looking for an established actor since it is a powerful role and will challenge Ranveer Singh's anti-hero, Alauddin Khilji. There has to be some chemistry between the actor and Deepika, especially for intimate scenes. Who better than an SRK or a Hrithik to play king Rawal Ratan Singh to the beautiful Padmavati?"*Hrithik Roshan*

Vicky, who was last seen in 'Raman Raghav 2.0' with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, was initially in consideration, but he reportedly lost out on the opportunity by revealing his association with the film early on. Some believe Deepika's reluctance to romance the three-film-old actor on screen led to his ouster. Bhansali then turned his focus to Hrithik and Shah Rukh with whom he has worked in the past.*Sanjay Leela Bhansali*

"The filmmaker seems to be favouring the Hrithik-Deepika pairing at this stage since their on-screen chemistry is unexplored. On the other hand, Shah Rukh has shown interest in the project. Bhansali is expected to take a decision shortly as the project is scheduled to roll in September," says the source.

A few reports claim Shahid Kapoor has caught SLB's attention too, but our sources say the contest is between Shah Rukh and Hrithik alone.

Bhansali's spokesperson, however, maintained, "There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the casting of Padmavati. This is to clarify that no names have been confirmed so far. An official announcement will be made once the cast is finalised."

*Sonal Chauhan*'s dress is effortlessly chic and the overall impact striking. White accessories — watch, shoes and handbag complete the look.

We like!

*Tiger Shroff* wears white pants, which are mostly on the ‘not to wear’ list this season. With options limited for men, shorts with a white shirt or jumper work best.

*Sonam Kapoor* sports loose, flowy maxis, which are a timeless trend and a wardrobe must-have. But this length is one you shouldn’t opt for in this weather

*Lisa Haydon* shows us a cool, breezy way of wearing whites in the rain. What’s more, off-shoulder numbers are all the rage this season

*Masaba, Designer*
The easiest way to sport white is to incorporate it into your accessories, like an umbrella, a poly nylon jacket or raincoat. You can opt for white clutches/ totes. Loose, white sweatshirts and tees with quirky graphics or cool slogans are in vogue and work well. Avoid white bottoms. Sporting a monochrome look with black bottoms will exude a casual but chic vibe. If you want to wear a thick cotton skater dress, don’t forget to layer. Throw on a bomber jacket or a white waistcoat. Opt for natural, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen, which won’t stick to your skin.

*Rocky s, Designer*
The best way to wear white for men is to simply layer it and wear deeper tones underneath. Go with breathable fabrics like cotton, voiles and chiffon, but make sure the under-layer is not sheer.

A nice poplin shirt over a white V-neck t-shirt worn with linen or denim shorts are apt for the rains. Accessorising with white is hot this season. White wayfarers look cool on most Indian skin tones.

Slippers/ shoes made of waterproof patent are big too. If you are open to taking risks, complete the look with a white linen hat. Everything mono white is perfect this season.

"My next film is a romantic one. I want to reinvent myself, so I am taking break for six months. I have not even taken a Sunday off in the last few years, so I need to slow down. So, right now it's a sabbatical for me and then I will start with my romantic film," Kamat told IANS.

As a director, Kamat has worked on films like "Mumbai Meri Jaan", "Drishyam", "Dombivali Fast" and "Force". He says he has unfortunately not made a film from a woman's point of view.

Asked why all his films have been from a male's point of view, he said: "During my theatre days, I have done all women-centric themes. I will make a women-centric film in future because I know this is one question even I have asked myself.

"Probably I didn't get the right script... It was such an honour to work with Tabu in 'Drishyam', but you need a substantial role for an actor of her calibre."

Asked that since this film has been promoted as Harshvardhan's film from day one, does she feel sidelined. Saiyami told IANS: "He signed the film eight months before me. His journey has been completely different.

"And it is the launch of Anil Kapoor's son, so it's going to be the topic of discussion... It's a huge deal. When you talk about being sidelined, I don't think that's the case because if you are doing a love story, you can't sideline any of the lovers -- the girl or the boy."

Mehra's directorial is inspired by the tale of the legend of Mirza-Sahiban and is touted to be an epic action-romance set in contemporary times.

Saiyami said her family has supported her through her journey.

Dreezy: No Hard Feelings

Dreezy: No Hard Feelings Chicago rapper Dreezy, a drill-adjacent upstart from the South Side, put competitors on notice when she ripped through a remix of Nicki Minaj’s “Chi-Raq,” proving herself a capable stand-in. Since seizing her moment, she’s grown into quite a well-rounded artist, appearing alongside veteran conscious rap guru Common, drill holdouts Lil Durk, Lil Bibby, King Louie, Sasha Go Hard, and Katie Got Bandz, and electronic duo AlunaGeorge, earning a record deal with Interscope in the process. Poised for a breakthrough, late last year she tested the waters with From Now On, a superbly-rapped EP that made use of her dexterity with nimble verses that swiftly navigated sounds from the producers of the moment—Metro Boomin and Southside. It was to-the-point, trap-centric, and a bit one-note, but it had just enough legs to build buzz for a proper entrance. A few weeks later, Dreezy released her lead single, the surprisingly smooth, Jeremih-featuring crossover jam “Body,” which seemed to suggest a more versatile effort was in store.

No Hard Feelings is Dreezy’s major-label debut, and it makes good on that promise. It’s a fully-formed offering that seamlessly balances her more rugged raps with pristine pop songs (sculpted in “Body”’s image) and tender slow jams. There are just enough drill bits to pacify Schizo era fans, but the album moves and turns on more subdued songs delivered in singsong and a few straight-up R&B joints. Dreezy is as accomplished a vocalist as she is a lyricist, with a glossy tone that rises as painlessly into falsetto as it does a playful squeal, and she slots in songs that sound like they could be a fit on a Sevyn Streeter album, like the infectious “Wasted” and the slow-burner “Break the News,” with more traditional bangers and deep cuts.

Skits help pull together a loose narrative that finds Dreezy at the center of a love triangle with a philandering boyfriend and a new would-be beau. The album drops the listener into a changeover—she’s put off by her boyfriend’s latest escapade and open to a replacement just as another suitor comes along—and the sequencing shuttles listeners through this story-in-progress with snapshots and vignettes of the trio’s interactions. But No Hard Feelings never goes out of its way to force-feed us these romantic entanglements. It isn’t a concept album—the songs don’t exist as building blocks for a relational drama—but they are carefully assembled to unspool the plot while making individual statements about love, sex, and compatibility, and they provide insights into Dreezy’s own life. The transitions are purposeful and well thought out.

The intro is a phone call from Dreezy’s friend alerting her that her man is with another woman and it segues into “We Gon Ride,” a song about Day Ones that functions as a vehicle for explaining that bond and transporting them to the cheater’s house. When they get there, he claims the girl is his cousin on a skit before “Spazz” drops in, and its central message—“On any nigga, I spazz/ On any bitch, I spazz”—lends itself well to the scene. The whole album is arranged this way. Details in songs interlock even when the songs themselves differ. It’s ambitious and well-executed, especially in the run from “Body” to “Afford My Love.” This is a byproduct of talent, work ethic, and circumstance aligning; Dreezy couldn’t have made this album a year ago, and the scope of the project shows just how much she’s grown and how far she’s expanded her repertoire.

Dreezy got here unleashing her flows, hunkering down into backloaded rhyme schemes and pressing her weight into them. It’s easy to hear Minaj’s influence on songs like From Now On’s “Money Printer,” where she flexes into pronunciations, and G Herbo’s on any number of older songs, barreling downhill and muscling through verse on sheer intensity. But stylistically she’s becoming independent of those sounds, adding more variety to her game and finding a voice that is distinctly her own. Her punches are direct and effective and still beholden to her forebears, but now she’s opting for a style that suits her even better: a chronicling approach that makes use of her sharply pivoting flows. She eases longtime listeners into the transition with drill-indebted tunes like “Spazz” and “Bad Bitch,” which rely heavily on her punchline acumen (on the latter: “Mean-muggin’ in the Ghost, they yelling Beetlejuice” and “Second time getting top from the same nigga, call that shit a recap”). But that’s merely one sliver of her identity, and she opens up when trapped in love’s throes (On “Ready,” she raps, “I’m really everything you think I am boy, it ain’t no hype/Young, independent, with a bankroll, I can change your life”). She’s expressing more now than she ever has.

Dreezy credits Interscope with broadening her palette, expanding her sound and testing her range, and No Hard Feelings makes a strong case for the nearly extinct A&R position. The album maximizes Dreezy’s talents, sets her up to hone her songcraft, and brings out her personality. Guests are all hand-selected for their roles: T-Pain plays the perfect partner for the duet “Close to You,” Wale is the ideal candidate to play the adversarial male voice opposite Dreezy on “Afford My Love,” and Gucci rides shotgun with ease on “We Gon Ride” (“MAC 11, I ride, keep shooters at every session/I’m ahead of my time, a blessing to the present”). Contributions from Bloodpop (Grimes and Justin Bieber), Terrace Martin, Cardo, and TM88 all find ways to push Dreezy’s limits. The slow strut of “Ready” provides an opportunity for more careful penmanship. She slips from a tottering singsong into a even slipperier cadence on “See What You On,” inspired by the swaying, sax-led tempo. On “Don’t Know Me,” Dreezy asks, “You don’t really know me, do you?” But on No Hard Feelings, she finally gives listeners a chance to. Reported by Pitchfork 7 hours ago.

Recent release “The Outlaw and The Pocket Watch” from Page Publishing author Richard Urrizaga is both captivating and cultural; this work keeps the reader mesmerized through the twists and turns of a western love story.

(PRWEB) July 21, 2016

Richard Urrizaga, an adventurer, outdoors enthusiast, story-teller, devoted writer and author, has completed his new book “The Outlaw and The Pocket Watch”: a gripping and potent journey of ranching, love, family and courage with several unexpected moments!

Published by New York City-based Page Publishing, Richard Urrizaga’s entertaining work will keep the reader fascinated!

“The Outlaw and the Pocket Watch”, is a story of a Basque immigrant's adventures in America. Escaping the tyranny of the Spanish Government, he takes on a sheepherding contract in the mountains of Nevada and eventually brings his bride from Spain to raise a family by ranching sheep. Despite starting from nothing, and the always-present prejudice that existed between the cattleman and the sheep industry of the times, through Basque determination, he flourishes. It is a story of a young man coming of age, his first love and the concerns by both sets of parents, greater now, because the boy's family is in the sheep industry and the girl's in the cattle business. It is a story of an old Missourian outlaw, scared and callused by war, who years before, because of mistaken identity, was given another chance. It becomes his life quest to "set-the-scales-right." The characters are as varied as the nocturnal inhabitants of the Nevada desert and are as colorful as a sunset on the Great Basin. The story has more twists than the root system of a Bristlecone Pine. Far from the formulaic "quickest-gun-in-the-west" tale, “The Outlaw and the Pocket Watch” is a portrait of hard working and hard-fighting pioneers by a man who has lived in the hills.

Readers who wish to experience this profound work can purchase “The Outlaw and The Pocket Watch” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon, Google Play or Barnes and Noble.

SC notice to Centre on rape victim's plea against abortion law

SC notice to Centre on rape victim's plea against abortion law *New Delhi:* The Supreme Court on Thursday sought response from the Centre and the Maharashtra government on a plea of an alleged rape victim challenging provisions of the abortion law which prohibits termination of pregnancy after 20 weeks even if there is a fatal risk to the mother and the foetus.

A bench headed by Justice J S Khehar issued notice for tomorrow and asked the petitioner to serve it today itself through the Attorney General's office. Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves appearing for the woman said that constitutionality of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 is being challenged in the plea as it puts a ceiling of 20 weeks for an abortion. The bench also comprising Kurian Joseph and Justice Arun Misra said that it will seek the report of medical board on the condition of the woman.

The fresh petition filed by a woman, who alleged that she was raped by her ex-fiance on the false promise of marriage and became pregnant, sought a direction to quash section 3 (2)(b) of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 to the extent that it puts a ceiling of 20 weeks for an abortion as it is ultra vires to Article 14 and 21 of the Constitution. The petition contended that the ceiling is unreasonable, arbitrary, harsh, discriminatory and violative of the right to life and equality.

It also sought an order for the Centre to provide necessary directions to hospitals for setting up an expert panel of doctors to assess the pregnancy and offer medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) at least to those women and girls who are survivors of sexual violence and have passed the period of 20 weeks.

The woman, who is in 24th week of pregnancy, said she belongs to a poor background and her physical and mental health have been put to risk due to the 20 weeks limit for abortion as her foetus suffers from anencephaly (a serious birth defect in which a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull) but doctors have refused to abort it.

The woman said the foetus has abnormalities and will cause mental distress to the mother and challenged the constitutional validity of section 3(2) of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act prescribing a ceiling of 20 weeks.

The plea also said the expression "save the life of the pregnant woman" in Section 5 of the MTP Act, should include "the protection of the mental and physical health of the pregnant woman" and also incorporate situations where serious abnormalities in the foetus are detected after the 20th week of pregnancy.

Speaking to mid-day, an eyewitness said, “I was on my night walk, when I noticed two huge tubes filled with liquid lying on the middle of the road that goes towards Aarey Hospital from Aarey Dairy. They had an opening at one end, which was tied and it was clear that it might be containing illicit liquor. I was standing few meters away when I saw a police van coming toward it. It punctured the tubes that contained illicit liquor.”*The illicit liquor was found in two huge tubes in the colony*

*Whose van is it anyway?*
The Dindoshi division of the traffic police had put a nakabandi in place in the area. Later, a van belonging to the division was also doing continuous rounds in Aarey and was trying to find the vehicle from which the illicit liquor was thrown.

Senior PI of Aarey police, Vijay Oulkar denied knowledge of the incident (see box: Passing the buck) and when he was told that the constables from the mobile van of Aarey police station were the ones who punctured two of the tubes that contained liquor he said, “I will inquire about the incident with our officials.”

Officers from Sewri police station said after shooting Bunty, the killers slashed his chest with a sharp object to ensure that he was dead. A history-sheeter, Bunty was shot twice in the back and once in the stomach at close range. Though the police rushed him to the JJ hospital, doctors declared him dead on arrival. Besides recovering three empty shells and two live rounds, police say the prima facie probe revealed that the victim and the accused were in the same area but in different bars.*Sushant Godekar*

Investigation revealed that Bunty, a resident of Byculla, had a few cases registered against him. Though the police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the crime, they suspect personal enmity. They have also zeroed in on Atul, a truck parking protection contractor in the area, whom they suspect of hatching the plot.

mid-day editorial: No honour in killing

There is something extremely wrong with the term ‘honour killing’. There is absolutely nothing honourable in killing a human being. The loss of a precious life can only be termed heinous. Yet, over the decades we have witnessed gruesome murders across the country, some in the name of caste, some in the name of religion, and some just to appease the absurd patriarchal ego.

The murder of a 15-year-old boy in Navi Mumbai by the family of an upper-caste girl has sent shockwaves across the country. An innocent life has been snatched away over the misplaced caste horsemanship. Not only has it left the communities of the deceased and the girl’s family divided, but has also given a fresh lease of life to the undercurrents of hatred that breed in social circles.

Vultures in power will exploit the situation by spreading hatred until the cows come home, and the administration will continue to be a mute spectator to the brutality on the streets.

Just a few days ago, the brother of Qandeel Baloch drugged and murdered the Pakistani model for bringing ‘disgrace to the family’. Qandeel was an outspoken woman and did not back down from speaking her mind. It was this attitude that ultimately infuriated the ‘honourable’ men in her life, leading to her gruesome murder. What is more tragic is that there are plenty of people who sympathise with the murderer and find appeasement to their displaced ‘honour’.

During the Dark Ages, millions of outspoken women were branded witches and burnt alive across Europe. It was a systematic movement that ran over 300 years to eliminate dissent and free speech. Europe has left those dark days behind it, but India hasn’t, it would seem.

It is time that the new generation steps up and puts an end to this. Inter-caste and inter-religion marriages will only help diminish the suspicion and hatred that has been passed down from generations. The foundation of a civil society should be laid on love, not a warped understanding of ‘honour’. Reported by Mid-Day 7 hours ago.
