Cops stop Prakash Ambedkar from visiting Kopardi Former MP Prakash Ambedkar yesterday said the police restrained him from visiting the Kopardi village, where a 15-year-old girl was brutally gang-raped and murdered a few days ago. “I was on the way to Kopardi with party workers to visit the girl’s family. However, when we reached halfway, Ahmednagar police requested me not to visit the village citing law and order situation, and also served me a notice (barring entry),” the grandson of Dr B R Ambedkar said.

“I was told that some people in the village had a meeting yesterday [Tuesday] and they have decided to throw eggs and tomatoes at me if I went there,” he said. Superintendent of Police, Ahmednagar, Saurabh Tripathi said police asked Ambedkar to return as the situation in the village was “tense”.

Sena has been sulking over various issues ever since joining the government. "Shiv Sena leaders did not get plum ministries or the ministries which entail day-to-day contact with the common man. That was the reason for our unhappiness in the beginning," a Sena leader said.

"Then it was realised that the ministers of state (from Shiv Sena) did not have much powers and not much work was delegated to them. Now the Shiv Sena MLAs are upset because they are not being able to push the government machinery or the ministers to get their work done," he added.

Former Mumbai Mayor Sunil Prabhu and MLAs Sanjay Shirsat, Ajay Chaudhari, Anil Kadam, Rajesh Kshirsagar, Subhash Sabne, Rajan Salvi, Shambhuraje Desai, Pratap Sarnaik and the party group leader in the Legislative Council Neelam Gorhe were amongst those who met Uddhav at the party office.

Many of them were also present at the meeting at the Thackeray residence, `Matoshree', last night. Yesterday, they had met at PWD Minister Eknath Shinde's chamber. Uddhav assured them that he would speak to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the source said.

The incident took place in the evening, when Siddique spotted Kandivli resident Pravin Ramchandra Gupta at the fish market and started demanding money, threatening to book him under false cases if the latter refused.

“He started asking all sorts of irrelevant questions. He took me near Sainath subway in Malad west, where he assaulted me and pulled out Rs 3,000 and the two ATM cards from my purse and dragged me to an ICICI ATM centre near Patel market,” said Gupta, adding that he sensed something fishy then.

“He should have ideally taken me to a police station, but when he dragged me to the ATM centre, I got a little suspicious. I saw a few people waiting there and gathered the courage to inform them about the way Siddique was torturing me,” said Gupta, who also works as a liftman in Hiranandani, Poisar.

When the people started asking him questions Siddique panicked and tried to flee, but failed. The Malad police team arrested him upon reaching the spot.

“I can’t work according to your whims and fancies. I have blocked my dates as per your request to complete cross-examination of your witnesses and now you want adjournments. I can’t give special treatment to you as I am answerable to several litigants,” said Justice Gautam Patel to Seema Sarnaik, Jaidev’s lawyer.

On the fourth consecutive day of the hearing, media persons and people unrelated to the case were not allowed in the courtroom. Also, Uddhav’s lawyer Rohit Kapadia was granted one more day to cross-examine Jaidev, who along with his third wife Anuradha and seven others, will be questioned to support his case.

He has challenged Bal Thackeray’s will, which does not give him any share in the property, and said that it was prepared when the then party supremo was unwell. He also accused Uddhav, who got a major part of the property, of influencing their father during his illness.

It was an evening flight, and an hour after we had begun to cruise the high skies, the air hostess emerged from behind the curtain, drinks trolley in tow. I’d decided I’d probably ask for a glass of red. Having been to the lounge at the airport where they had a clear sign informing Indian passengers they were only entitled to two drinks each, and having seen their rather poor whiskey menu, I imagined red to be safer. But then I spied an unopened bottle of Talisker in the corner of the trolley shelf. I restrained the ecstatic heart-leaping-inside-me, convulsive fit I was in and calmly asked for a glass.

“On the rocks, Ma’am?” she asked.

“Ice on the side, please,” I replied.

She gracefully acquiesced. Before I could dedicate myself to my drink, I decided to run through the in-flight entertainment menu. It seemed like the perfect moment to finally watch An Affair to Remember. When the air hostess returned with a plate of chicken tikka kebabs for me to snack on, she noticed I’d been sipping my drink like a miser, desperate to prolong the sanctity of each sip. Without asking, she poured me a second glass, almost to the brim, and handed it to me.

“So you don’t need to ask again,” she said.

I was euphoric. I could now savour my Talisker as I watched the classic film. Sleep was for businessmen. I’d catch up on it in the hotel room.

It is no secret that I love single malt. Ever since I was first introduced to it by a dear friend and long-time collaborator. I never expected to fall for it so steadily and irrevocably, especially since I was never a whisky drinker, always preferring red wine instead of grain. I still enjoy red wine, and delight in spending hours poring over labels to locate a good harvest and a great blend. But I never imagined when I had my first sip of Laphroaig, how indelible the memory of it would prove. As I said to a friend a few days ago, I can understand why a wine connoisseur could spit out a draught of red after rolling it around the contours of her mouth , swirling it around to extract its complex flavours. Red wine dances along the tongue, the textures sit upon it long after you have either swallowed it or spat it out. But the mysteries of single malt are only revealed after it has glided past your throat and you can trace its foray into the pit of your stomach. The roof of your mouth detects the subtleties of peat, the smokey, redolent flavour that seems almost intangibly delicate.

I performed the same ritual I have recently appropriated as part of my routine whenever I find myself with a glass of single malt. I ask for ice on the side, and a cocktail stirrer. I make do with my fingers in the absence of one. I dunk a single cube into the liquid, then I install the leg of the stirrer, or my finger tips to swirl the ice around so that it marginally chills its contents while unveiling its densities, opening them up so they are better revealed. Then I extract the ice and abandon it.

Yesterday, as I was reading the introduction of House Spirit: Drinking in India, by the anthology’s editor, Palash Krishna Mehrotra, I felt first disappointed, then just annoyed that the book had contributions by at least 25 men and just two women. The only reason I’d bought it, apart from my personal and academic interest in the subject of alcohol, was to read Manohar Shetty’s essay, ‘Conduct Unbecoming’. Manohar has been a dear friend for many years, and I love his poetry. He had often told me about his decision to quit alcohol, and I was interested in reading his essay about the struggle. But I wasn’t prepared for the gross underrepresentation of women’s relationship with alcohol. As a corrective, my next two columns will be dedicated to non-teetotalling women, and what we mean when we say, “Let’s get a drink!”

Attacked by patient's kin, doctors strike work

*Resident doctors at Lady Hardinge Hospital went on an indefinite strike on Thursday evening after some of their colleagues were allegedly assaulted by relatives of a child who died during treatment. *

The family members of a three-year-old girl admitted at the government hospital allegedly attacked doctors on duty in the early hours of Thursday after the child died. The doctors have demanded better security measures at hospitals. A doctor was bit by an attendant with the child and another received deep scratches, alleged doctors.

A woman was arrested after police registered an FIR. The girl was admitted at the Kalawati Saran Childrens Hospital under the Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC). LHMC has two hospitals under it - Kalawati Saran Childrens Hospital and Sucheta Kriplani Hospital.

"Doctors from both the hospitals have decided to go on an indefinite strike," said Dr Ravinder Chauhan, member of resident doctors' association at LHMC. The child suffered from encephalopathy. According to doctors, the patient's family was told that she was in a critical condition.

"The patient expired around 4.30 am. Around half-an-hour later, a mob comprising at least 15 people arrived at the paediatrics ward," said Dr Vikram Bhaskar, senior resident doctor at the paediatrics department.

"They were carrying rods. Doctors ran inside for cover and the guards ran away. Two of the mob members were in an inebriated state. One woman bit a doctor while the other one scratched another doctor's hand," he said.

"The family was from Sarai Kale Khan, according to the hospital register. The mob was violent even though the family was clearly told in advance that the patient was brought in a serious condition to the hospital," said Dr Bhaskar.

The resident doctors association has demanded better security measures from the hospital administration. "The authorities have promised us better security arrangements and CCTV cameras in the hospital. However, these incidents keep recurring and things have not improved for resident doctors," said Dr Chauhan.

Doctors have repeatedly protested against the rising number of attacks on them at hospitals. Recently, attendants of an accident victim vandalised hospital premises after the patient succumbed to his injuries.

Doctors at government hospitals have gone on strike several times demanding better security. The Delhi Medical Council (DMC) also held a meeting recently over cases of assault on doctors in the capital.

Council members, police, representatives of Federation of Doctors Association (FORDA), Indian Medical Association and Delhi Medical Association had then debated how to improve the doctor-patient relationship. Reported by Deccan Herald 2 hours ago.

The officials raided the residence of Qureshi where he stays with his wife, in Seawoods at 3 am on Thursday. Qureshi was later produced in Vashi court. He is in four days’ police custody at Bhoiwada jail.

According to sources, Bestin Vincent alias Yahia (24) a member of IRF, and his wife Merin alias Mariam, got converted to Islam. Both are from Palakkad in Kerala. Ebin Jacob (25), the brother of Merin told the police in his statement, that they were attempting to forcefully convert him to Islam and asked him to join the Islamic State terror group.

Bestin and Merin are among the 20 who are missing from Kerala and are suspected to have joined ISIS. Bestin brought Jacob to Mumbai and made him meet Qureshi. Jacob has said in his statement that he was taken to IRF where Qureshi told him to get converted to Islam.

On the complaint from Jacob, Palarivattom police in Kochi have filed a case against the two missing people, and Qureshi under Section 13 of the Unlawful activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Section 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion) of the Indian Penal Code.

Ever since an ambulance struggled to reach a housing society inside Sagar City Complex on Wednesday, residents have been plagued by worries of a greater peril. While BMC claims the digging activity is crucial to repair a drainage pipeline, over 4,500 residents are getting affected due to it.

*No escape*
Andalib Sultanpuri, a Pacific Society resident, said, “On Wednesday, a dead body had to be shouldered till the house because the ambulance carrying it couldn’t enter the Complex — the very entrance to Sagar City has been dug up. Instead of 5 minutes, traversing this stretch is taking up 30 minutes every day.”

Another resident, Tanaz Patrawala of Indian Ocean Society, informed, “There’s a road behind the Complex, but it’s too narrow for a vehicle to pass through.”

Sagar City Welfare Association vice-president, Riyaz Elias said they have already reached out to BMC, but haven’t received any response yet.

It has been learnt that though MHADA is yet to issue an NOC, shopkeepers claim they have received a verbal go-ahead for the commencement of business on the ground floor. With the power supply yet to be restored fully, shopkeepers are using inverters. While the iconic Café Mondegar has commenced operations, another biggie, Metro Shoes, will start operations soon.

Though the interim structural audit report states that the building was stable enough and did not need to be razed, it clearly mentions that B and C wings require extensive repairs before they are reoccupied. Even the upper floors of the A wing require minor repairs. A detailed audit report is awaited.

While the interim report states that A wing’s ground floor is safe, another empanelled architect ruled out the use of C wing’s ground floor.

When mid-day visited the spot, a few shops located on the ground floor of all the wings were operational. Even the hawkers have reclaimed their spots on the footpath.

*No power*
Speaking to mid-day, Raj Kalapi, of Kalapi stores, said, “We are facing a lot of problems. There is no electricity and the dirty water from the floor above seeps into the shop, emitting a foul smell. We have opened the shop so that it dries out. We are not doing full-fledged business again.” Like Kalapi, several shopkeepers are awaiting the NOC from MHADA.

His son Wesley said that the MHADA and BMC officials are kept in the know about a few shopkeepers opening their shops. “But if they object, we will shut shop. We are co-operating with the authorities.”

Another owner, who was sitting in his dimly lit shop, said, “The BEST won’t give us electricity unless MHADA orders it. And MHADA is awaiting the final audit report. We are suffering tremendous losses. Business is bleak and we are in dire straits.”

Shopkeepers claiming that the more influential tenants used their contacts to restore power supply to their respective establishments.

*Official speak*
Assistant Municipal Commissioner (A-ward) Kiran Dighavkar said, “As per the interim report, permission was given to Café Mondegar to start operations. MHADA will undertake structural repairs now. Our role is limited.”

MHADA executive engineer Dilip Garje said, “Based on the interim report, only Café Mondegar was issued permission to reopen. Today [Thursday], we gave permission to Metro Shoes to operate from the ground floor, while McDonald’s will require a lot of repairs. None of the other shop owners have approached us. Though their shops are comparatively safer, they need to formally apply for an NOC.”

The incident came to light after the son raised an alarm after witnessing the act. The neighbours then alerted the police. Laxmikant Kangutkar, Akshata’s husband, was at work at the time of the incident. “There have been noticeable quarrels between the two. Both were killed in front of the son and then the police came to their house to take custody of the bodies. We got to know that the daughter-in-law killed the mother-in-law and then drank poison,” said a resident of the housing society.

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2016/jul/Sisraat-Jahan-s.jpg*Sisraat Jahan and Mohammed Afez Khan, grandparents of Dilnawaz have been trying to get his birth certificate for the last five years*

KEM claims they do not have any data about his birth. On Thursday, Khan went to KEM, visited one department after another, requesting doctors and officers to provide them the right document so that they could get Shaikh’s birth certificate and admit him in a school.

“I have been doing the rounds of the hospital for the past five years but despite this, no one has come to help us. The hospital provided us the wrong documents while discharging him. Now, they are saying that they do not have data about his birth on the day,” Khan said.

Shaikh was born on August 16, 2010 at KEM hospital but the diagnosis in his discharge certificate from the hospital was listed as ‘malaria’ instead and he was termed as a one-year-old, when his existence was only 48 hours long.

“On the day my grandson was discharged, he was only two-days-old, then how can he become a one-year-old? They made a mistake in providing the discharge certificate, because of which we have been suffering for five years,” said grandmother Sisraat Jahan.

*BMC can’t help either*
As the certificate provided by the hospital does not state that Shaikh was born in the hospital, even the BMC cannot provide a birth certificate. “In 2010, when Dilnawaz was born, we didn’t notice the discharge documents properly as it is written in English and so we didn’t even understand it. But later, when we went to BMC to take the birth certificate of the child, we were first told that the hospital didn’t give the right documents,” said Khan.

When mid-day spoke to the administration department of the hospital, an official said, “We have checked our database but cannot find the name of child in it, except for his malaria documents, which state that he was one-year-old in 2010.”

*Other kids have proof*
Now, because of the confusion and goof up of the documents, the family is unable to admit the child in any school, as it is compulsory to submit the birth certificate for admission. “After Shaikh, my daughter gave birth to two other children in KEM hospital and we have received their birth certificates from BMC. I don’t know how Dilnawaz would get admission in a school without the birth certificate. In fact, he would never be able to get admission in a good school under Right to Education (RTE),” said Khan.

The state school education minister, Vinod Tawde, made an announcement to this effect in the ongoing Monsoon session of the state legislature. Suggestions and inputs have been invited from education and subject experts, on how to redesign the subject taught at school level. The minister however has categorically specified in his speech that this should not be linked with saffronisation.

Tawde said, “Until now, for years, history is taught in a typically structured manner, where topics have not gone beyond the independence struggle of the country. We are still teaching children history of wars fought with swords, and several dates of births, deaths of significant personalities and wars. After independence, till now, there have been so many events of great significance in economic, political and social sectors of this country. It is a new history with newer developments that took place in this era. These need to be taught to children in history.”

To bring those living with this vacuum together, to talk about characters and moments, Wow Tables, a restaurant reservation portal, has started the Story Club, where people can gather to discuss books and cinema over tea and snacks. In the first chapter of this event this weekend, two popular books Harry Potter and To Kill a Mockingbird will be discussed.

*From the Harry Potter series*

Samira Major, the host and the organiser, says that the idea is to encourage reading and bring readers and movie buffs together. “We want people to bring their favourite books and join us for a sparkling discussion forming a relationship that will hopefully continue,” she says.*To Kill a Mockingbird*

The choice of books was, Major says, to involve both book and film lovers. “The event opens with discussion of two chosen books that have also been made into films. We will be discussing plot holes, comparisons to their cinematic counterparts, character strengths, flaws and more,” she says.*Samira Major*

In the second session, participants will recommend books for others to read. For this, they will bring along a book and discuss it briefly. “Chits of all participant’s names will be put into a bowl and who gets which book will be decided by drawing of chits. A record will be kept of the same,” she says. The exchanged book will have to be returned at the next meeting.

“We have ensured that the food and ambiencematches up to the standards of international book clubs and hope that it will be a lively session,” she signs off.*What's on the menu?

The girl, a student of another college, was assigned the accused’s college as her exam centre. Bhandare, who was deputed as supervisor, first molested the girl while distributing answer sheets.

*Read Story: Navi Mumbai: Teacher sexually assaulted on way to school in Kharghar*

A police officer said, “The first time it happened, the girl ignored it thinking it might have been a mistake but Bhandare did it twice again during the exam. The girl got scared and finished her exam as fast as she could. Also, Bhandare smiled at the girl while she was panicking. After giving the exam, the girl ran out from the classroom and narrated the incident to her parents.”

*CCTV, a strong proof*
The same evening, she, along with her parents, filed an FIR against Bhandare at Vile Parle police station. The cop added, “Since the classroom had a CCTV camera, the whole incident was recorded. After going through the footage the next day (Wednesday), we arrested Bhandare. The tape will serve as a strong evidence against him in court.”

While probing his background, the cops are also trying to find out if he has victimised anyone else earlier.

Dressed in an LBD and white sneakers, an elated Shakti Mohan greeted us into the 2,800 sq-feet studio. “I wanted to create a space where dancers feel free to innovate and create movements. The view from the studio is relaxing and I can spend hours here,” shares Mohan, who discovered the space accidentally. “Owning a studio was a dream. I was doing a photo shoot in the building opposite this one. I loved the view and casually exclaimed that it would be perfect to own a dance studio here. The photographer told me that the building right across had a space available. He showed it to me from outside. The next day, I came here with my parents who loved it and we finalised the place,” adds Mohan who has been a professional dancer for a decade now.*The Wall of Inspiration features photos of her dance gurus. Pics/ Prabhanjan Dhanu*

The entrance to the studio is neat with off-white walls and dark wooden furniture. The space houses a small studio meant for solo and duet dances and a large one that can accommodate bigger dance troupes. Apart from mirrors, the studio offers the spectacular view that is also visible from the balcony, through large glass windows. There’s a small meeting room for choreographers to have ‘corporate-style’ discussions too. The high point, though, is a cosy viewing room that one can reach via a short flight of stairs. With rugs, comfy cushions, low seating and viewing windows that allow you to see the goings-on at both studios without being physically present at the rehearsal, this space is most interesting.*Shakti Mohan with her idol Madhuri Dixit Nene (left) on the sets of a reality TV show*

Mohan’s favourite spot is the Wall Of Inspiration, where one can spot photographs of Terence Lewis, Neeti Mohan, Remo D’Souza, Madhuri Dixit Nene and some of Mohan’s other dance gurus. “They are the reason I started dancing. I was a topper in university and everyone thought I’d appear for IAS. Initially, when my elder sister Neeti started dancing, everyone at home was against it. She fought our battles too. By the time it was our turn (my sister Mukti and I), the doors had opened. Neeti was in Ashley Lobo’s company in Delhi. We watched her and learnt. Terence taught me dance like you would study any other subject while doing a Masters. He didn’t think I was cut out for reality shows and that motivated me to participate in and win Dance India Dance Season 2,” shared Mohan while we scanned the other photographs on the wall.

When we congratulated her on having designed a chic-looking space, she confessed that her dad is the interior designer. “I was heading to USA for a tour, and I found the place just before leaving. I had four contrasting ideas that my dad felt were too confusing. He designed the space on his own and handled the labour too,” she laughed. The studio features a sound system bought in Chennai that was recommended by AR Rahman’s sound engineers and will soon hold regular programmes/classes for both, professional dancers and amateurs.

Founded by Mishti Verma and Faisal Poonawalla, the space which hosts a variety of workshops, will now also feature an intimate performance space on the lines of a black-box theatre (consists of a simple, somewhat unadorned performance space, usually a large square room with black walls and a flat floor). Mumbai Theatre Guide (an online portal dedicated to theatre) and Astitva (an organisation that promotes aspiring theatre performers across the country by providing multilingual avenues and platforms) will present a curated programme of plays that will be regularly staged at the alternate venue with a seating capacity of 75 people and an 18 feet by 14 feet stage.*The workshop space*

“Performance spaces are at a premium in Mumbai, especially those that can cater to experimental theatre. Not all plays can draw crowds to fill large auditoriums. Beyond (the northern suburbs) Vile Parle, there are hardly any intimate spaces that meet the needs of young and upcoming theatre artistes as well as established groups that have smaller plays to stage,” says Bhavik Shah, co founder Mumbai Theatre Guide. “We will be staging plays like Mohan Ka Masala and Karl Marx In Kalbadevi in August. These are not big productions; the focus is more on the content. We intend to curate plays across languages. The space will also present Mumbai Theatre Guide and Astitva’s ENatya Chaupal programmes that focus on theatre talks, discussions, play readings and screenings,” he says.*The new theatre space at The C.L.A.P Centre in Malad (W). http://images.mid-day.com/images/2016/jul/Tukaram-Mundhe-s.jpg*Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe*

He has gone after illegal encroachments and has cracked down on other illegal activities, making him hugely unpopular with politicians. At the monsoon assembly session Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Manda Mhatre raised the issue of the recent demolition of illegal constructions and  demanded that Mundhe be transferred from Navi Mumbai.

This triggered an avalanche of support from citizens who have started an online petition against the demand for his ouster. The posts online call Mundhe, among other things, “honest and dedicated” and have even thanked Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for posting him in Navi Mumbai.

Aniket Naik (29), a resident of Vashi and a filmmaker, said, “Support for Mundhe started when politicians along with locals called for a bandh on July 18 to protest against his demolition of illegal constructions. I have lived in Navi Mumbai all my life and have never seen a civic chief who is so quick with decision-making. Sector 9 in Vashi was a mess. Hawkers had encroached on all roads. But, Mundhe took action and the place is all cleaned up now.”

Naik said Mundhe also took down all illegal structures built by shop owners on footpaths. He said even though action used to be taken earlier, hawkers were back the very next day, but not this time.

Residents said Mundhe has also been going after the builder lobby. “In Juigaon in Vashi, numerous buildings have come up in the past few years. Whether they are legal or illegal no one knows. Mundhe has been getting all this demolished,” he said, likening the civic chief to Anil Kapoor’s character in the film Nayak.

Avinash Waghmare, a resident of Sanpada and a sales executive, said he was frustrated with the regular bandhs called by political parties. “Is the bandh to support the people or harass them? Our support is completely with the commissioner as he is working on taking the city forward by clearing it of illegal hawkers and constructions. We want him here for his entire tenure.”

Sandeep Lahoria, a Navi Mumbai developer, is also backing Mundhe. “The illegalities in Navi Mumbai have almost come to a full stop. People are now thinking twice before considering building illegal structures. My father Sunil Lahoria, who was killed, had exposed an FSI scam. If Mundhe had been there at the time, maybe the situation would have been different,” Lahoria said. Reported by Mid-Day 7 hours ago.

Uproar in Parliament over AAP leader Bhagwant Mann's video

Uproar in Parliament over AAP leader Bhagwant Mann's video *New Delhi:* Both houses of parliament witnessed uproarious scenes on Friday, leading to their adjournment, over the video footage circulated by Aam Aadmi Party Lok Sabha member Bhagwant Mann.

As soon as the house assembled, several BJP members including Kirit Somaiya, R.K. Singh and others including from the Akali Dal were up on their feet demanding action against Mann.

The AAP MP from Sangrur in Punjab wanted to say something but nothing could be heard in the din.

Mann on Thursday shot a video clip of his journey from home to parliament, including going past the various security pickets, and uploaded it on the social media, drawing flak from various quarters for putting Parliament security in peril.

The Speaker summoned Mann to her chamber to explain his position.

The AAP lawmaker later appeared before the Speaker.

The issue was raised in the Rajya Sabha also with members including Anand Sharma of the Congress) and Sitaram Yechury of the CPI-M maintaining that the issue amounted to breach of security and privilege of members of Parliament.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi too described the matter as serious and said the government and the Lok Sabha Speaker are seized of it.

Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien said there is no doubt about the seriousness of the issue. However, as pandemonium continued for a while, Kurien adjourned the house till 12 noon.

Earlier, outside Parliament, Naqvi told reporters that "the circulation of such video footage was against parliamentary rules at a time when terrorists are looking for opportunities to attack".

"Giving out such sensitive information and video footage of sensitive areas of Parliament is wrong."

In the video that went viral, Mann is seen giving commentary as his vehicle crosses security barricades, while going to Parliament. "I'll today show you something you would not have seen earlier," Mann said at the beginning of the video.

Indian expat and animal rights activist Neetu Jindal has decided to highlight the issue by gathering like-minded people and protesting outside the Indian Embassy in New York in the coming weeks. “The idea is to make the BMC understand that there is international concern about the matter. We object to raising any animal in captivity in the first place, let alone keeping penguins in a tropical country. I have been mustering support for the cause over the past few days, towards which friends and relatives have expressed solidarity,” said Jindal. The protest is likely to take place in the first week of August.*Neetu Jindal, animal rights activist*

*Reality check*
Meanwhile, local activists have clarified that they not only condemn the introduction of penguins at Byculla zoo, but are against the idea of displaying exotic or local animals in captivity. When asked why they weren’t demanding the release of other animals at the zoo, Anand Siva said, “Those animals have lived in captivity for too long. They might not survive in the wild.”

When it was pointed out that even the penguins were probably bred in captivity, he countered that penguins aren’t made for a tropical country with perpetual water shortage.

Jindal and Siva termed the introduction of penguins a waste of public money, water, electricity and resources. They stated that the penguin enclosures will require 2.4 million litres of water, which is a criminal waste, considering the year-long water cut the city experienced until Wednesday. Also, a lot of electricity will be consumed by the air-conditioners for maintaining the optimum temperature inside the penguin enclosure.

The record stands as one of the most divisive releases of the 90s: insanely popular on its release, the hype quickly turned to empty hubris, with fans turning on the release.

Una row: 3 Dalits attempt suicide; situation largely peaceful

Una row: 3 Dalits attempt suicide; situation largely peaceful *Ahmedabad*: Three more Dalit youths allegedly attempted suicide today in Botad district of Gujarat even as the situation in most parts of the state returned to normalcy after witnessing three days of violent protests by community members over beating of Dalits for allegedly skinning a dead cow in Gir Somnath.

At Ranpur village of Botad district, three youths attempted suicide by drinking poisonous substance, to protest the Una incident, police said.

"Villagers informed police that three youths from the same village had tried to commit suicide to protest the Una incident after which they were taken to nearby hospital and then referred to Bhavnagar hospital for treatment," Botad Superintendent of Police, Saroj Kumari said.

As the news of the suicide attempt spread, hundreds of Dalits gathered at the hospital to show solidarity with the cause, Kumari said.

So far, more than 20 youths have attempted suicide during the ongoing protest.

Members of Congress party blocked a national highway in Vadodara by burning tyres that caused traffic jam. Police managed to clear the road and detained five persons in this connection.

Protest rallies were taken out in some parts of Ahmedabad district and Patan, as Dalits in Ahmedabad's Viramgam came out in hundreds and submitted memorandum to local administration demanding justice.

A protest march was carried out in Patan as well. While in Modasa in Arvalli district, markets continued to remain closed for the second day as local businessmen protested damages done to their shops and establishments by Dalits during the ongoing agitation.

Businessmen demanded action against vandals who damaged several shops causing loss of property.

District administration in Gir Somnath--where Mota Saladhiyala village is located--imposed Section 144, which prohibits gathering of more than four persons, to avoid any untoward incident by preventing gathering of people to protest.

"We imposed Section 144 last evening which will remain effective till July 31, in order to keep the situation under control," Collector Ajay Kumar said.

For at least three days, protests against brutal thrashing of Dalit youths at Una, allegedly by some self-styled cow vigilantes, flared up with incidents of
vandalism and arson being reported from several parts of the state.

Nearly half a dozen of state transport buses were damaged while scores of youths attempted suicide. Stone pelting and damages to shops were also reported during these three days.

16 people have been arrested so far in connection with the assault on Dalits, while four policemen have been suspended for dereliction of duty.

Since the time of eruption of protests, 20 Dalit youths have tried to commit suicide in separate incidents across the state.

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2016/jul/Sisraat-Jahan-s.jpg*Sisraat Jahan and Mohammed Afez Khan, grandparents of Dilnawaz have been trying to get his birth certificate for the last five years*

In fact, he would never be able to get admission in a good school under Right to Education (RTE),” said Khan.

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2016/may/28Donald-Trump-s.jpg*Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Pics/AFP, AP*

"This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction, terrorism and weakness. America is far less safe - and the world is far less stable - than when Obama made the decision to put Hillary Clinton in charge of America's foreign policy. I am certain it is a decision he truly regrets," the 70-year-old real estate tycoon said in his acceptance speech here as the Republican presidential candidate.

"Her bad instincts and her bad judgement - something pointed out by (Vermont senator) Bernie Sanders - are what caused the disasters unfolding today," he said.

Reviewing Clinton's record, Trump said in 2009, IS was not even on the map and the situation across the Middle East was stable. He blamed Clinton for giving rise to the IS and for sowing chaos in Iraq, Libya, Syria and Egypt.

"After four years of Hillary Clinton, what do we have? IS has spread across the region, and the world. Libya is in ruins, and our ambassador and his staff were left helpless to die at the hands of savage killers. Egypt was turned over to the radical Muslim brotherhood, forcing the military to retake control. Iraq is in chaos.

"Iran is on the path to nuclear weapons. Syria is engulfed in a civil war and a refugee crisis that now threatens the West. After fifteen years of wars in the Middle East, after trillions of dollars spent and thousands of lives lost, the situation is worse than it has ever been before," he said.

He said Clinton's legacy does not have to be US legacy. "The problems we face now - poverty and violence at home, war and destruction abroad - will last only as long as we continue relying on the same politicians who created them." Trump said while Clinton's message was that things will never change, his message is that things have to change. "And they have to change right now," he said amid applause.

Clinton fired off an icy rebuke on Twitter during Trump's speech, telling him: "We are better than this."

Countering Trump's attack, the Clinton Campaign accused him of painting a dark picture of an America in decline and said that his speech was yet another reminder that he is temperamentally unfit and totally unqualified to be President.

"Tonight, Trump painted a dark picture of an America in decline. And his answer - more fear, more division, more anger, more hate - was yet another reminder that he is temperamentally unfit and totally unqualified to be President of the US," Clinton Campaign chairman John Podesta said.

"He offered no real solutions to help working families get ahead or to keep our country safe, just more prejudice and paranoia. America is better than this," he said.

"America is better than Donald Trump. Next week in Philadelphia, Democrats will focus on issues, not anger. We'll offer a positive vision for the future based on lifting America up, not tearing Americans down," he added.

At the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, 68-year-old Clinton would be formally nominated as the party's presidential candidate.

Trump said when a secretary of state illegally stores her emails on a private server, deletes 33,000 of them so that authorities cannot see her crime, it puts the country at risk.

He added that corruption has reached a level like never before.

"When the FBI Director says that the Secretary of State was 'extremely careless' and 'negligent' in handling our classified secrets, I also know that these terms are minor compared to what she actually did.

"They were just used to save her from facing justice for her terrible crimes. In fact, her single greatest accomplishment may be committing such an egregious crime and getting away with it - especially when others have paid so dearly," he said.

"When that same Secretary of State rakes in millions of dollars trading access and favours to special interests and foreign powers I know the time for action has come," he alleged.

In another statement, the Clinton Campaign said Trump would be an embarrassment on the world stage. "Trump has done little to outline anything that resembles a concrete or serious foreign policy proposal. He seems content instead to brag about how brilliant he is and how much he knows - all while consistently making clear he doesn't understand the basic facts on key national security issues that the next commander-in-chief will face," it said.

"And the ideas he has laid out, from his position on nuclear weapons to his Muslim ban, are extremely dangerous," it added.

On the other hand, as Secretary of State, Clinton used smart power and hard-nosed diplomacy to score key national security achievements while navigating a dangerous world.

*Smriti a 'thumkewaali':* In December 2012, during a TV debate on assembly election results of Gujarat, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam referred to Smriti Irani as a 'thumkewaali'. ‘Aap toh TV pe thumke lagati thi, aaj chunavi vishleshak ban gayi,’ (Till some time ago you were dancing on the TV screens and now you have become a psephologist), he had said. He also said that British filmmaker Leslee Udwin whose documentary featured the interview of a December 16 gang-rape rapist ‘must have got permission easily because of her white skin’.

"Our party MP, Meenakshi Natrajan is a Gandhian, simple and an honest leader. She keeps going from place to place in her constituency. I am a seasoned smith of politics. Meenakshi Sou Tanch Khara Maal Hai (totally pure)," the Congress General Secretary had said, addressing party workers in Mandsaur town, MP

*Mamata ridiculed:* Back in 2011, a CPM leader of Hooghly, Anil Basu, went to the extent of comparing Mamata Banerjee with the sex workers of Sonagachi, a red-light district in Kolkata. Subhas Chakraborty, a late Left leader, mocked Mamata’s Maa-Mati-Manush slogan, calling her infertile. “She is an infertile woman; what does she know about Maa?”, he had said.

*‘Men make mistakes’:* In April 2014, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said that rapists should not be handed death penalty as boys make "mistakes". "Ladke, ladke hain. Galti ho jati hai (Boys are boys. They commit mistakes)," he had said. Mulayam also said, “When their friendship ends, the girl complains she has been raped.” Citing the example of a court sentencing three men found guilty of gang-raping two women in the abandoned Shakti Mills in Mumbai, he said there was a need to change the new rape law, which provides for death sentence to repeat rape offenders.*Abhijit Mukherjee with wife*

*‘Dented and painted’:* In December 2012, President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee infamously referred to women participating in Delhi gang-rape protests as 'highly dented and painted'. “I wonder whether they are students at all what's basically happening in Delhi is something like pink revolution, which has very little connection with ground realities, he had said.

*An 18-year-old girl was attacked with acid for rejecting a marriage proposal in east Delhi's Gandhi Nagar on Thursday.*

She has suffered permanent damage to her eyes, police said. The girl works as a labourer at a shoe-sole factory, and was allegedly attacked by a colleague and her brother.

"The girl sustained 60 per cent burns and is undergoing treatment at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. Her condition is stated to be out of danger," said a police officer.

The accused have been identified as Golu and his sister, who is said to be a juvenile.
The girl lives with her family at Gandhi Nagar A-2 block and was at home when the brother and sister met her at 8.30 pm.

The siblings live in Ghaziabad and had been insisting on her marriage to Golu. He had tried to meet the girl at her house at least thrice.

"On Thursday, an argument broke out between them over the marriage proposal. During the melee, Golu used a bottle of acid to attack the girl," the officer said.

It is alleged that Golu was in an inebriated condition and was carrying a white plastic bottle containing acid.

They fled when neighbours began to gather there. The girl was taken to hospital in an autorickshaw.

A case under section 326-A (causing grievous hurt by throwing acid) of the Indian Penal Code has been filed with Gandhi Nagar police station.

The family members of the victim told police investigators that Golu often harassed her.
On Friday, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal met the girl and her family members at the hospital.

"The victim is in critical condition. I met the Medical Superintendent to assess her status and found that her care had been neglected," Maliwal told the media.

Maliwal alleged that her bandages had not been changed since 10 pm on Thursday. "After the commission's intervention, the girl was shifted to a private ward," she added. Reported by Deccan Herald 6 hours ago.
